High-School Buddy, Job Connection
High-School Buddy, Job ConnectionHigh-School Buddy, Job ConnectionBlaine Helmick got help from an old friend to score a new job.Blaine Helmick never thought he would land his next job through social networking. The IT director for a hospitality company in Orlando, Fla., had been with his former company for nine years and welches ready for a change. He joined Ladders Job Search Consultation Program and received advice that he didnt expect - join LinkedIn.Im not a social-networking kind of guy, Helmick said. But he was open-minded, and he tried to contact someone at Disney by seeking referrals through his extended network on LinkedIn.He was kind of hesitant to do that because he only knew a few CEOs, said Mallory Labriola, Helmicks personal job-search consultant through Ladders program.Like Helmick, many of Labriolas clients in the $100K-plus market tend only to think about other high-level executives as possible networking contacts. By contrast, Labriola said, mid-level connections can be just as valuable, especially when professionals use social networking to leverage them.I would really stress to him that you dont only use connections that are high-level, Labriola said. With every lower-level contact, you get another 200 people as well. There were several layers of contacts between Helmick and his target, and when one of them - the father of an old high-school pal - saw his resume, the man just couldnt pass it along. He wanted Helmick for himself. His friends dad worked for the president of Technomedia Solutions - another hospitality organization in Orlando that offered Helmick a lot of upside.Helmick was learning quickly that the world of social networking is a small one.You never know who your buddy from high school knows, he said. I never thought that social networking would have contributed the way that it has.Helmick wound up interviewing for the Director of Information and Creative Technologies position at Technomedia and got the job.Helmick said hes ve ry pleased with his results Technomedia has a lot of room for growth and he is performing a larger variety of creative multimedia installations to a bigger list of prestigious customers. The top three takeaways from his job search ?Go into it with an open mind.Hire a consultant.Be responsive to criticism and direction.Had he not done all three of those, Helmick said he wouldnt have been in the position to advance his career. While he wont be joining Facebook any time soon, Helmick did admit that the experience has given him a new outlook on that type of medium. My mind is definitely changed about the power of social networking, he said.Helmick said hes also sold on the Job Search Consultation Program because the outside help of a professional broadened his strategy in a way that wouldnt have occurred to him.Its all about building out your network regardless of that persons current position, Ladders Labriola said.As for Helmicks old high-school buddy, I told him on his next trip down h ere I will be treating him to an exorbitantly expensive dinner, he said.

Think You Cant Get a Job Think Again.
Think You Cant Get a Job Think Again.Think You Cant Get a Job Think Again. The only thing standing between you and your next job could be your negative thoughts. While coaching people in transition over the past two decades, Ive noticed a fascinating pattern of human behavior Job hunters have a tendency to adopt, and cling to, the limits of what they perceive to be their weakest link as a candidate. These are the pieces of your career and profile that you think are holding you back.To tap into your own limiting beliefs, or secret excuses, finish either of the following sentencesMy job search would be going better if it werent for Ill never get the job I want fruchtwein because No matter how optimistic you are, there is a good chance you have your own answer to either or both statements. Here are just a few of the limiting beliefs I hear fruchtweinIm too old. Companies want to hire younger workers.I dont have enough experience to get hired in that industry.Ive been out of the game too long. (This is a favorite among women who want to return to work after taking time off to raise children.)They only hire MBAs. (Substitute whatever advanced degree is applicable to your industry.)They only want people from Ivy League schools.Companies arent hiring. The economy still isnt that great. Some of these beliefs are easier to correct than others. Some are at least partly true. The Partial TruthI wish I could say that all hiring managers are open-minded and willing to look for potential beyond cookie-cutter credentials. We all know that isnt true. Worse, there are companies that discriminate on the basis of age, sex, religion and other factors beyond our control. It shouldnt happen, but it does. The problem occurs when you take what happens in some unfortunate circumstances and believe it will happen in ALL circumstances. In general, the more you make this logical leap, the more pessimistic you will become.According to psychologist Martin Seligman, Ph.D., author of Learned Opt imism, the most pessimistic among us adopt thought patterns that are personal, permanent and pervasive. This plays itself out in self-defeating thoughts like, Its me. Its going to last forever. And its going to impact everything I do.There are two ways to get beyond these thought patterns and limiting beliefs. While each technique can work on its own, the fastest, most effective strategy is to focus on both simultaneously.1. Rewire Your Thought PatternsBased on the way our minds are wired, once we start giving a thought attention, energy and focus, it becomes a more prominent part of our experience. At that point, evidence validating the thought seems to appear everywhere, and it becomes a belief. This phenomenon is an important part of what is known as the Law of Attraction.Fortunately, it is possible to change the way you think. But the correction takes practice because it requires you to reverse the method you used to create the beliefs. In other words, you actively have to seek evidence that contradicts your current worldview. For example, if you believe you wont get a job because companies dont hire older workers, challenge yourself to find examples of people older than you who have been hired recently. If you honestly cant think of anyone, start asking others. Before long you should have a few examples that prove your belief is not always true. Remember, it doesnt have to be completely true for this to work. After all, your goal isnt to eradicate age discrimination around the globe your goal is to convince a single company to hire you because you have the potential to positively impact its business.2. Deactivate Your Weakest LinkAt the same time that you are working on changing your thought patterns, you have another equally important task to improve the way you are marketing yourself.People with a secret excuse often dont push themselves hard enough in the self-assessment process because they are convinced it wont matter. This is the most dangerous thoug ht of all. Andrea, an unemployed event planner, recently explained to me why she wouldnt be able to get a job by saying, Everyone I know in this industry is either unemployed or afraid they are about to be.Not willing to accept this outlook, I challenged Andrea to demonstrate the reasons she was worth hiring. At that point, her resume was no help at all because it started out with three typical, generic bullet points Negotiated with unionsWorked with hotels and convention centersBooked speakersYawn. Yawn. And yawn again. If you are an event planner, thats your job Like most resumes, Andreas looked more like a job description than a compelling track record of accomplishment. Despite her limiting beliefs about the market, she proved to be quite coachable and worked hard to quantify her accomplishments.Once we uncovered the gold in Andreas background, we put together a table that highlighted her efforts. At a glance, hiring managers could now see that Andrea had planned events of up to 20,000 people. Better still, by consistently coming in at or under budget, she had saved her company $1 million over an eight-year period. That represents an average annual savings of $125,000 $50,000 more than her salary In other words, she is an investment, not an expense.Despite Andreas limiting beliefs about her employment prospects, she had a job within three weeks of adding the table to her resume. Why? Because people could look at her and think, Wow If Andrea can do that for her last company, think what she could do for us.Andreas story is one of my favorites because it clearly demonstrates the power we all have to deactivate our limiting beliefs. Its a process that takes time, but I promise it is worth the effort.

Career advice from successful women leaders
Career advice from successful women leadersCareer advice from successful women leadersFrustration over the persistent gender wage gap and how to fix it have followed women in the workforce for decades. From Sherbeiyl Sandbergs early days of Lean In to her subsequentacknowledgement that its not always that simple, the conversation about how to change the lack of women in the C-suite and what to do about maternity leave and the years that follow continue unabated. But before women workers decide the glass ceiling on their career trajectory is unbreakable, consider these three women with inspiring careers that binnenseem to defy the dire predictions.Fords FuturistSheryl Connelly has been serving as the in-house Futurist for Ford Motor Company for over a decade. She toldLadders her path to this job welches a circuitous one.I never expected to become a futurist, I didnt even know what it was. I stumbled into it. Im a Gen Xer. That means (the few, the proud, the cynical) I came of age durin g a recession. I was basically trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I didnt come to it from a place of passion, but mora are you sure that you will be employable?Connelly studied finance that did not land me a job. She also went to law school and practiced law for a little bit of time, but wasnt passionate about it. Next up, Connelly went for an MBA because she was curious to see if the geschftliches miteinander degree could take me someplace. It took her to tax compliance, which she said couldnt be more dry. But Connelly spotted something, she saw intersectionality there and thought that with her law degree and finance degree should could create something, so she wrote to Ford. My resume got kicked over to sales and marketing. A scary undertaking for me. What young person wants to go into sales, its so intimidating? And for a car company, Im not as well versed. But Connelly grew up in metro Detroit and really admired the brand, and to be honest she thought it would be temporary.Connelly began by answering the 1-800 line and for a year answered questions ranging from whos my local dealer to my cars making this noise (Connelly grunts) what does it mean? Connelly learned to be a good listener, and to think in a consistent way. She was then relocated to Pittsburgh and was selling cars to dealers. I thought theyd see through me and know I was a fraud- and of course they did. They were so patient in terms of their generosity with me. I credit them with giving me my education. Our dealers are one of the greatest strengths we have. Connelly did that for a while, but like other Gen Xers she had a crisis of confidence and worried since she didnt love cars. She spoke to her colleagues about it and concluded that you dont have to love the product as long as you love the people, which clearly she does.Twenty years later, Im still here. When she needed a change, she joined the Global Consumer Trends and Futuring Team When I joined the team it was rel atively new. It was a push organization. They had to knock on doors and tell people what they do. Thirteen years later, Connelly is the one remaining member of the team. These are some of the lessons Connelly learned over the past two decadesExplain, then find ways to collaborate The message we have is so important, but we cant tell people how to use it. We tell people- these are the trends, this is how people are responding to it. Hospitality, trends.Provide something people can use Im not telling people how to do their jobs, Connelly says Im bringing them information they didnt have the time or luxury to find on their own.Combine your talents Connelly says her MBA taught her how to apply insights, while her law degree taught her how to research, and build a logical, persuasive narrative behind her view. She hooks people with her point of view backed by sources.Change doesnt happen overnight Connelly explained that most trends can take years to take flight. A big part of my responsi bility is to separate a trend from a fad. It takes us 3-5 years to take an idea and execute it through the workplace. So we do long term trends and we look at micro trends. If a macro trend will be relevant for 2-4 decades, a macro trend will be relevant for 2-4 years.Compassion and dignity matter One of Connellys newer projects includes finding ways to help an aging population. So self-driving cars may sound like the stuff of The Jetsons, but the notion was born of helping senior citizens live better more mobile lives.Connelly is one of the clearest thinkers weve ever encountered, most especially because she makes what can seem like an intimidating concept accessible. When asked about her favorite trend, she declares Mindfulness to be the one she thinks will stick around. I obviously cannot predict the future, sadly, no one can. By exploring the things you cant control, helps give you a better grounding of whats happening around and why its happening. The goals of Ford is to make p eoples lives better. Weve changed the dynamic. Not just individuals as our customers, but our cities. We think we can do it. Based on her vision and explanations, we think she can too.The Female FishermanJulie Decker is a commercial fisherman executive director of Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation. She has what many would see as an incredibly unusual if not bold career for a woman, but she doesnt quite see it that wayI dont really think of myself that way. I think that I mostly want to do cool stuff things like traveling to Alaska, being outdoors in highly remote areas, seeing parts of nature that many dont get to experience (e.g. commercial diving), having a job that is interesting and challenging, etc. I think keeping focused on what you want to accomplish rather than the challenges helps get you were you want to go.When asked for tips or advice for women and men to be bolder in the workplace, Decker answered I dont approach situations by thinking of myself as a woman. I t hink of myself as a human being. What is important to me is doing a good job wild at what Im doing whether that is catching as much wild Alaska salmon as possible, or being a supportive wife and mother.Decker shared some lessons shes learned in her atypical careerThe jerks are truly the minority We will always run into people who try to cut us down or who dont welcome a woman in a field that is traditionally men there are always those jerks. However, they are the minority. In my experience, the majority of people are good. They care more about what you produce and how you handle yourself.Surround yourself with a strong support network Decker says when she has to deal with the occasional jerk or other type of obstacle in the workplace, I surround myself with friends and family who are supporters. For instance, my husband is my biggest cheerleader. He encourages me and believes in my abilities even when I question them myself. My closest friends are similarly supportive. These are th e types of healthy relationships that will help you deal with challenges or be bold by taking a risk on believing in yourself even when its scary.Create your own role models Decker says many of her friends are her role models. I have a girlfriend who plays in a rock band in San Francisco, another who took a career risk to start her own economics analysis geschftsleben (and now she has more work that she can handle,) and another who integrates her commercial fishing knowledge and passion for thriving coastal communities to creatively develop solutions around resource management, which allows for positive development of Alaskas fishery resources and environmental protection.Dont sacrifice your values Decker says A person doesnt have to sacrifice her values or certain personality traits. Be yourself, but be the best yourself that you can be.The Music Row ExecIf youre at all familiar with the Nashville music scene, youll know how unusual it is to encounter a woman on the C level. Beth Laird, Co-Owner CEO of Creative Nation Music, began her career as a college student when her mother ran into her old babysitter, Capitol Records head of publicity Regina Stuve, who suggested Laird come in as a summer intern. Laird knew nothing about country music, but drove to Nashville 3 days a week that summer from her home in Winchester, Tenessee and interned for free for the summer. It changed my life because I fell in love with the music business and knew that is exactly what I wanted to do, which included another internship the following year, she says. After graduating, Laird worked at BMG Music Publishing as receptionist. It was the break I needed and I didnt take it for granted. I worked really hard to make a great impression and build relationships. That job gave me the relationships and knowledge I needed to do what I do now and I am forever grateful.Laird also offered some insights to inspire others trying to find their way in a traditionally male-dominated industryKeep it in the family Laird and her husband Luke Laird, a songwriter and producer run the company together. We really wanted to try doing publishing our way. So, we took a big risk by jumping out and funding the company ourselves so we could do it the way we wanted.Evolve as a leader Even if youre learning as you go, you can evolve to become a stronger professional. Laird says We are over five years in and my role continues to change. I love songwriters and the creative process and have a heart for helping them achieve their dreams so that goal has stayed the same. I dont think I ever could have anticipated the challenges of being a boss and business owner, but I love that role as well and think I am always evolving as a leader.Keep your blinders on Laird says Dont compare yourself to others. Its hard not to and we all do it at times but if you can figure out what your unique talents and strengths are and play to those, then I think you can make a name for yourself. There will always be so meone you can compare yourself to that seems to be doing it better or more successfully than you but you cant focus on that. You just have to keep your blinders on and be your best self. That way you will always do what you love and be proud of the work you are doing. The female advantage Laird says shes always viewed being a woman as an advantage in the music business.I realize some men feel more comfortable working with other men but women like having a female point of view on their team and some men enjoy that too. We just see the world differently. If someone doesnt want to work with me because I am a woman, I dont worry about that. I just look for the clients that see it as a strength and then try to build the best team around them to accomplish their goals. Sometimes being a woman in a male dominated industry can feel overwhelming but Im always up for the challenge It makes me want to work harder and smarter.Dealing with criticism Laird advises not taking it personally. You have to take the criticism and let it make you better or use it as a catalyst to prove them wrong. If you let it get to you, they win and you wont pursue your dreams based on other peoples fear.Embrace change Laird says I think the biggest challenge of running any business in the music industry is change. You cant always project what your earnings will be or control the outcome of your work so you have to be crazy enough to go for it and believe in yourself. I love being a small independent company because we can quickly adapt to change and that is why we have evolved over time. I am constantly trying to gather as much information as possible and stay up to date on the evolving music trends, technology and legislation, but I also have to remember that it all comes back to a great song. If we can work with the best clients, focus on their individual goals and keep them in their most productive space, then the rest will fall into place and take care of itself.

Squad goals abound at this media giant, where respect and collaboration are the foundation of their highly visible and lauded products One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hat s analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further su pported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportuniti es/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo wel ders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
